[PlayStation 5] Agriculture Review

by Ceidz, Owner

Agriculture from eastasiasoft and Nerd Games is a fast-paced puzzle game in which you must grow crops as fast as possible. Check our Agriculture review!

Farming takes patience, as everyone knows… unless you’re playing Agriculture, that is. Agriculture is a fast-paced twist on beloved farming sim mechanics where the goal is to grow each stage’s required crops as quickly as you can using limited resources. Buy seeds and tool upgrades from the shop to aid in your efforts but purchase responsibly and always keep your wallet in mind. If you run out of time or money before meeting the stage goals, you lose!

In Agriculture from eastasiasoft and Nerd Games, you’ll be taking on the role of a farmer and will have to deliver each level’s required crops as fast as possible before the time runs out. This is an arcade-style experience that is played at a very fast pace.

As the first level begins, you’ll be tasked with delivering 3 carrots. This is done by first purchasing the seeds, then sowing the soil and planting the seeds. They’ll instantly grow, and after a few seconds, they’ll require water. Once watered, they’ll grow to their final state and can be harvested to then be sold at the shop. This whole process will take only a few seconds, and you have a timer to stress you. If you reach the time limit, it’s over, and you’ll have to restart the level.

Agriculture PS4 Review

This is a fast-paced game because the plants will die from thirst in an instant, so you have to water them immediately. Failing to water a plant will result in the plant dying and will also prevent you from using this tile until the plant is removed – which is often a time luxury you won’t have. There are also birds that will come to eat your seeds or plants, so you’ll be busy when growing your garden and making sure you can harvest and sell your plants.

The controls aren’t super great for this type of game, which happens when a game is ported from PC to console. The action – sow, plant, water – must be selected with the D-Pad – while the different seeds or harvested plants are in a line in the center, from where you can select with the L1 or R1. This was very confusing, unintuitive and generated errors like selling the seeds instead of the plants. Another idea would have been to if the game auto-selected the action depending on the current tile status. Moreover, trying to perform an action on the field will often fail because you aren’t aligned on the grid – this happens a lot with watering. It would have been better if the character action could snap onto the grid.

One thing that disappointed me at the beginning was that there was absolutely no tutorial in this game, and I was confused with the gameplay mechanics. You’re not told that you need to purchase the seeds or sow, and you are not told about how to control the game. I found that the hard way when I hit a wall at level 27 – each level before this one was easy to win. I noticed at that point that you could upgrade your inventory to work with a 3×3 grid at the time instead of 1×1, which helps tremendously. This could have been avoided if there had been a tutorial that had shown me this option. With that being said, once you finally get the hang of things, the gameplay is actually quite simple.

On the presentation side, this game is very minimalistic, with only a single screen for the game and only a single musical track too. The trophies are also very straightforward since the list with one Silver trophy and 11 Gold trophies will require you to finish up to level 32 so that you can get a new Platinum trophy which should take you around 2 hours at most. The game is also Cross-Buy meaning that you can get a Platinum for the PlayStation 4 version and a Platinum for the PlayStation 5 version. In case you need help, here’s an Agriculture Trophy Guide.

Agriculture PlayStation Review

Agriculture is a fun, fast-paced puzzle game that can keep you entertained for a little while. The game has a progressive difficulty but lacks a tutorial that would have helped see the more advanced (and required) features past level 25. All in all, this one is easy to recommend to trophy hunters looking for a new Platinum that can be obtained in around 2 hours at most. Agriculture is also a Cross-Buy title, so your $4.99 purchase will allow you to download both the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game.
