Undead Horde 2: Necropolis from 10tons combines action RPG elements with a dash of strategy and hack ‘n’ slash for an interesting combination. You’ll be taking on the role of a mighty necromancer who will use its power to raise an army of the dead that can destroy everyone and everything on its path. As you defeat those foolish enough to stand on your path, you’ll gain the resources needed to improve and upgrade the titular city of Necropolis. It’s a follow-up to Undead Horde, which was released on PlayStation back in 2020.

Necropolis is the city of the dead, a place for souls to find solace in the afterlife. Unfortunately, things started to change when humans invented Soul Jars. As their name suggests, they allowed the living to preserve their loved ones after their death… forever. With people despising death more and more, they turned their eyes toward Necropolis and its inhabitants. They invaded the city thanks to an interplanar portal. Led by Benevictus, they destroyed everything and everyone on their path.

What the living don’t realize is that by going one step further and being greedy, scavengers pillaging the remaining treasures from within the ruins wake you up from within the Necropolis catacombs. You’re the city’s last hope, and you’ll have to add more and more units to your army to be able to turn the tables. For this new experience, you’ll be able to command undead armies of more than 100 units, so you better be ready for it!

Once the action gets going, you’ll be able to control your character with the left analog stick as you aim with the right one, directly attacking enemies by pressing the R2 button. This will allow your character to use a melee attack. By killing enemies, you’ll be able to raise new warriors from their remains by pressing the R1 button. Do know that there’s a cooldown on when you can use this ability again, so be sure to make the most of it by activating it at the right place and the right time so that you can outpower your opponents.

After you’ve added some units to your side, they can be commanded to attack by pressing the L1 button. Pressing the L1 button again will allow you to recall your units. This is important since it will allow you to save them from receiving too much damage when they end up being outnumbered. To keep this from happening, you need to make sure that you attack enemy buildings. If you don’t attack them fast enough and let them be, they will automatically repair themselves as they continue to produce more and more units. You’ll eventually unlock staves, which allow you to spend mana to conjure magical attacks.

By defeating enemies and completing quests, you’ll gain experience points. Obtain enough experience points, and you’ll level up. When this happens, you can press the Triangle button to access the level up menu. From there, you’ll be able to pick a card for that level. Grab the Jack of Magic, and you’ll gain a boost to staff power. Collect the Jack of Vigor, and your health will get a good push. Or maybe you’d like to get the Jack of Mind to increase your mana?

There’s a limit to how many units you can command in your horde. You can check this on the top left corner of the screen, thanks to the handy ring around your character’s portrait. All of your units will be represented within these rings by different segments. Each unit type will also be represented by different colors so that you can easily know at a glance if you have any room left for summoning new units, as well as how many of each type you have.

During your journey, you’ll end up finding several items from the many treasure chests you’ll open or from the enemies you destroy. These will be added to your inventory, which you can check with the Circle button. Be sure to check all of the items that you collect so that you can review their stats and decide which one can help you the most. While your starting weapon can help you get the job done, you’ll need to equip more powerful weapons that deal more damage or that have a faster attack rate so that you can help your horde defeat your enemies.

By clearing an area and reclaiming it, you’ll be able to collect Soul Jars. Once you take these back to Necropolis, you’ll be able to unlock new talents for your units. The first examples for these will be the ones you can obtain at the Skeleton House that will be fixed by the first commoner you free from its Soul Jar. This will allow you, for example, to reduce the unit command cost of skeletons, lower how much damage they receive from arrows, or even boost each skeleton unit’s total hit points so that they can last longer in battle.

Do know that you’ll have to spend gold coins to unlock talents, and you’ll need to assign them to unit groups in exchange for talent points. To unlock new talents, each building will need to be upgraded by spending gold coins. This will also increase a unit’s HP and damage, so it’s certainly a good investment in the long run! There’s also a limit on how many different types of units you can have on your current horde. To add more types, you’ll have to find the effigy that unlocks that unit, as well as repair the pedestals so that you can add extra slots to which to assign new unit types. You can then select the unit type to summon from the dead by using the D-Pad.

When you gain some Runes, they will be mapped to the D-Pad. You’ll be able to use them by pressing left or right on the D-Pad. Runes can be truly valuable while exploring each new area since they can save you from defeat! Take, for example, the powerful Rune of Isolation. By activating this one, a protective spell will be cast, which can completely protect your main character for 5 seconds. This Rune is very useful for when your current group is defeated, and you need to fall back before enemies overwhelm you.

This is a Cross-Buy title, so your purchase will allow you to download both the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 versions of the game, with each one having its own trophy list. The list includes 16 Bronze trophies, 13 Silver trophies, and 4 Gold trophies for you to work on. The easiest one to unlock is for dying for the first time. Along with that, you will need to complete objectives such as entering each location and completing all levels in said areas, obtaining your first talent, uncovering ten secrets, gaining 100,000 gold, unlocking ten different unit types, or digging up ten buried treasures, to name some examples.
