Action RPG Trinity Trigger from XSEED and FURYU Corporation is one worth checking out on PlayStation 5. I had an absolute blast playing the game! The story revolves around Cyan, who suddenly meets a girl that tells him there is a bounty on his head – it is because his eye sometimes glows fiery red. The two team up and travel the world together along with their familiars, known as Triggers, which can turn into powerful weapons for the characters.

Trinity Trigger Review - 1

The game is played from a top-down view. You can visit a wide variety of towns and cities, plus the many dungeons, which pay homage to classics such as The Legend of Zelda. Sometimes you will feel a bit stuck as the way forward can be blocked by rocks, icicles, and so on. To clear these, you simply need to use the correct weapon. Two rocks might look the same in every way, but sometimes they require two very different weapons to remove them. If you don’t have the correct weapon, you can simply come back at a later time when you have more weapons which you will get as the game progresses naturally.

Trinity Trigger will display the number of chests under the minimap, and you’ll have to take your time as you search every nook and cranny to find all of them. Sometimes even enemies will drop a chest! Beating bosses also drop a chest, and it counts towards the tally for that area, so do keep that in mind! Yes, there are trophies tied to opening the hundreds of treasure chests in the game – more on trophies in a bit – so you’ll have to open up all of them. And once you have progressed enough in the game, you will unlock the ability to work on sidequests, and completing them will take you all over the game world while netting you different rewards, so they are definitely worth doing. Some will have you go up against a boss!

A bonus is you are not tied to just one character. You can change characters at will with a simple press of a button and make use of their weapons and abilities. When one character is KOed, the game will auto-change to the next one. If you have any revive potions left, you can use them to heal their condition and switch back if preferred. Each character has unique skill sets that you can level up with using TP you earn from winning battles, a great incentive to engage in battles. But the biggest downside of the battles is the stamina bar.

You can only get around five hits in, and you’ll then have to wait a few seconds for a full recharge and then rinse and repeat. I found this annoying, especially during boss battles. I felt this affected the flow of combat, so it might get in the way of your overall enjoyment. It is also worth noting that you can perform powerful team attacks when your special meter is full. I would recommend using this for bosses since these special attacks can really turn the tide of a battle. Saving them for later can certainly prove to be useful.

Another thing to consider is that booses have shields, which you have to knock down to stun them for a short period of time. This will allow you to jump in with all of your strength. This would be a great time to use that special attack so that you can speed things up, or else a boss battle might drag on for a bit. Bosses will only get stronger as you progress through Trinity Trigger, so paying attention to their movement and attack patterns will be crucial if you want to survive.

The game offers a full trophy list with a Platinum, and since it’s a Cross-Buy title, you can download the PS4 and PS5 versions of the game since each one has its own separate trophy list. There are 15 Bronze trophies, 17 Silver trophies, and 3 Gold trophies. As mentioned before, some of them will pop as you open up the many treasure chests in the game. The rest will unlock as you gain new abilities, defeat bosses, find some souvenirs, complete all requests, craft a bunch of items, level up one party member to levels 20 and 45, upgrade a weapon to its final form, defeat thousands of enemies, and hold a ton of money at once – 500,000 Liba to be precise!

Trinity Trigger PS5 Review - 4

All in all, Trinity Trigger is a fantastic game worth checking out on PlayStation 5. Other than the stamina meter sometimes getting in the way, this is a very fun release that is a blast to play. The graphics are colorful and vibrant. The music gets you ready for the action. Trinity Trigger is a Cross-Buy title, so your $49.99 purchase will give you access to both the PlayStation 4 and the PlayStation 5 versions of the game at no extra cost. You can also get the Trinity Trigger Deluxe Edition for $59.99, which includes the game as well as the Extra Episode DLC and the Weapon Set DLC.

This Trinity Trigger review is based on a PlayStation 5 copy provided by XSEED.
