In Saga of Sins from Just for Games and Bonus Level Entertainment, you’ll take on a 2D action adventure through a stained glass world. The game takes place in a medieval setting with religious themes. The story is set during the crusades, probably during the Holy Lands crusades and the beginning of the plague. That would mean it takes place in the 14th century.
You play as Cecil, who has returned to Sinwell from fighting in the Crusades in the Holy Lands back. Upon his return, he finds out that his homeland has a sickness that no one yet understands. His mentor thinks sin is the root and the cause of all the turmoil. He asks Cecil to cleanse Sinwell of sin, and he agrees. Saga of Sins is a 2D sidescrolling platformer.
Once Cecil finds a sinner – and it is not that hard since the whole game is littered with sinners – you can enter their minds and rid them of the sins that they are suffering from by completing the level. Inside the mind of the sinners are platforming levels, full of enemies that look like devils with horns and tails, with some having four legs! Some levels will have shorter segments that play out more like puzzles, while others will have more enemies to beat and a boss to take on. Your quest won’t end until you expel the seven deadly sins from the town.
While in town, Cecil will walk around and talk with the many NPC he meets. Once he enters a level, he will become a creature with magical powers. He starts as a wolf with fireball abilities and a howl that can break open any visible cracks in the walls. As Cecil progresses, he can complete more stained glass windows at the church, and you can unlock even more forms, each with its own special abilities.
A gargoyle can breathe fire, which can burn the pesky boxes in earlier levels that have treasure chests hidden behind them, It really puzzled me at first as I could not figure out how to get the treasures, but once I unlocked the gargoyle, that problem was solved! That means that if you see something in a level that you can’t access, that means you will be able to use an ability from one of the creatures you’ll unlock later in your adventure.
Along with entering the minds of sinners, you can also enter the minds of the innocents, and that’s where those puzzle-centric experiences will take place. You’ll find extra treasure chests to loot, but they are not necessary for completion. They do count towards your journal collection, so it is worth entering the innocents’ minds whenever you can so that you can 100% Saga of Sins.
The game has a full trophy list with a Platinum, with 2 Bronze trophies, 3 Silver trophies, and 10 Gold trophies to unlock. Plenty of the trophies are tied to defeating X number of enemies using a single power dash, which you’ll get to do at different points in the game. You’ll also have to loot all treasure chests in the game. And you have to buy all upgrades on the skill tree, which means getting all dash moves, all shot upgrades, all health upgrades, and beating the game. And there’s also a trophy for beating the game without dying once. That’s going to be a challenging one to get!
Overall, Saga of Sins is a game that is very different from what I have been reviewing lately. The game’s look is very interesting, making it look as if a world made of stained glass had come to life. The controls are tight, the graphics are beautiful to look at, and there’s lots of content to enjoy in this PlayStation release. Saga of Sins is out on PlayStation 5 at a $19.99 asking price. There’s also a PlayStation 4 version available as a separate purchase for the same price.
