Charming sequel Figment 2: Creed Valley from Bedtime Digital Games is an action-adventure experience through the human mind. You’ll once again be taking on the role of Dusty, the mind’s courage, who is joined by his trusty companion Piper. Figment was originally released on the Nintendo Switch way back in 2018, and since I enjoyed the prequel, I was more than ready to check what this new installment had to offer.
In Figment 2: Creed Valley, nightmares are busy spreading chaos through the mind. They have managed to shatter the Moral Compass, and the mind is not functioning properly! This is why Dusty and Piper must travel to the titular Creed Valley, where the mind’s ideals are formed so that they can try to restore the peace that once existed. The game has a musical twist to it, as you’ll get to experience while exploring each area and battling the bosses you’ll find – more on these in a bit.
You’ll control Dusty with the left analog stick as you move through each colorful location. You can attack with the Square button and can try to dodge incoming attacks by pressing the X button. The items that you collect will be added to your inventory, from where you’ll be able to use them by pressing the Circle button. Just open up your inventory with the Triangle button, move the cursor over the item you intend to use, and press the Circle button to confirm.
As you progress through each stage, you’ll end up running into a solid variety of bosses. You’ll need to pay attention to their movement and attack patterns to find the right time to attack. Boss fights will be broken into different sections, and each one will require something different from you. For one segment, you might be able to directly confront and damage a boss. For another one, you could be forced to make a run for it so that you can find a better time to take on the boss. And maybe you’ll have to solve a puzzle before finally being able to defeat a boss!
Each boss will have its own song, and it’s that song’s music and lyrics that will clue you into why that particular nightmare has invaded the mind. It’s thanks to the music that you’ll be able to stand a chance as you use the rhythm to find your groove. The first one you’ll be taking on is the mind’s fear of the dark, and the song’s lyrics will reflect this right from the start. You’ll get to see how your actions affect your human’s mind and how the events in the real world change the mind in an instant.
While exploring each segment, you’ll get a chance to experiment a bit with the mind by switching the area between two specific states: open-minded and closed-minded. As expected, while the general area will remain the same, there will be some changes here and there that will make it possible to find the secrets that will open the way, leading you deeper and deeper into the mind. You can check the mind’s current state in the upper right corner of the screen. To make the big change, you’ll have to locate and activate a Perspective Switch.
Figment 2: Creed Valley has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy at the end of your journey. The list includes 13 Bronze trophies, 4 Silver trophies, and one lone Gold trophy for your collection, along with that shiny Platinum you love to collect. To get it, you’ll have to complete a variety of objectives as you progress through the game. These include unlocking memories, defeating bosses, defeating enemies in specific ways, completing a maze segment without taking any wrong turns, collecting all Remembrane Shards in each level, and beating the game.
I enjoyed my time with Figment back when I reviewed it in 2018, and the same can be said about sequel Figment 2: Creed Valley. It improves and expands on what the prequel did, with new gameplay mechanics, new locations to visit, and new nightmares to take on as you battle it out in favor of the mind finding the inner peace it so desperately needs. You can play the game on your own or take on this journey with someone by your side, thanks to the local co-op option that allows someone else to gain control of Piper. Figment 2: Creed Valley is out today with a $24.99 asking price.
