Visual novel sequel Piofiore: Episodio 1926 from Aksys Games and Otomate takes us back to Burlone for a new adventure. The game picks up after the events from Piofiore: Fated Memories, so you might feel a bit lost if you didn’t play that one before taking on Episodio 1926. This is a Rated M for Mature experience, so it’s a visual novel that not everyone is going to click with right away.

Piofiore: Episodio 1926 - 1

The story takes place in the port city of Burlone, Italy, where everything is controlled by three powerful mafia families: the Falzone, the Visconti, and the Lao-Shu families. They’re all fighting for more and more power, but when a new threat looms over Burlone – and main protagonist Liliana Adornato – they must all put aside their differences and work together by way of a temporary truce… before it’s too late!

Since this one is a visual novel, there’s plenty of reading in your future because there’s a ton of story in this one! That is unless you happen to know Japanese because that’s the language for all voice actors in Piofiore: Episode 1926. You’ll be reading dialogue after dialogue by pressing the A button, but you can also press the ZR button to activate the auto mode so that the dialogue progresses at a steady pace on its own.

Piofiore: Episodio 1926 - 2

Something interesting about Piofiore: Episodio 1926 is that as you play through its story, you can enjoy its content in different ways to get a better look at the bigger picture. There’s the MS System (Meanwhile Story) which allows you to see what is happening behind the scenes as the main story progresses. Some of these episodes are introduced automatically, while others need to be triggered by pressing up on the D-Pad when prompted. There’s also the ARIA System, which gives you a chance to revisit the story from the point of view of another character. Just press left or right on the D-Pad when the selection icon appears on the screen to give it a go!

Along with experiencing the story that follows the best ending from Piofiore: Fated Memories for Dante Falzone, Gilbert Redford, Yang, Nicola Francesca, and Orlok, there’s also an Episodio Alternativa option. For this one, the story follows the Finale Ending from Piofiore: Fated Memories, and it presents its content as an advent calendar journey since you’ll be selecting events from the small drawers on the screen that split things into the events for the month – January, February, March, and so on. It’s a year in the life of the mafia!

Piofiore: Episodio 1926 - 3

Having said that, it’s really all I can say about the different story beats for Piofiore: Episodio 1926. Taking even a single step into where each of the stories starts during the first chapter of that path will ruin your overall experience and your enjoyment of this release if you haven’t played Piofiore: Fated Memories. This new story does call back to some of the moments from the previous game as well, so saying anything else – especially where each chapter starts – goes straight into spoiler territory.

If you enjoyed Piofiore: Fated Memories, then getting Piofiore: Episodio 1926 is a no-brainer. If you haven’t played the previous game, then it’s a bit harder to recommend that you skip it and go straight into Piofire: Episodio 1926, but it’s certainly an option. Piofiore: Episodio 1926 is out on Nintendo Switch with a $49.99 asking price. You could also grab the physical Limited Edition straight from the Aksys Online Store to also get a full-color art book, a 1″ round enamel pin, 7 2″ vinyl stickers with Chibi artwork, and a 16×22 full-color exclusive cloth poster on top of the Aksys Online Store exclusive 3″ acrylic key chain.
