Last Threshold from Feardemic and Astrolabe Stories is a Lovecraftian Rated M for Mature visual novel adventure on Nintendo Switch. It’s 1962, and you’re Wiktor Staszewski, the son of an explorer exiled to Siberia. The ruins in Siberia are what drove your father to become extremely obsessed with any findings, and it’s now your turn to carry on and follow in his footsteps. Joined by your mentor, you’ll try to unravel the temple’s mystery as you try to find the truth in Chucki land.

The choices you make along the way in this hand-painted visual novel will dictate the outcome of your story. Exploring the ruins will give you a better idea of your father’s obsession, but if you’re not careful, it might end up becoming yours! As Wiktor makes his way to the temple, w learn that it was thanks to an earthquake that the ruins – very similar to the structures described by your father – have finally been uncovered. Will you be able to succeed where your father fell short?

If you’re not familiar with the visual novel genre, it’s one that certainly does its name justice. There’s usually a ton of reading to do, with some offering voice acting either for specific story segments or for the whole experience. Last Threshold is of the former, and because of this, you’ll be spending a lot of your time reading all of the text that will bring you closer to what is going on in Siberia, as the ambient sounds and the soundtrack do a solid job of complementing the story. You’ll be making some choices along the way, and these will lead you into specific conversations during which you’ll learn new information.

Talking about a visual novel’s story would end up spoiling your experience, especially for one with Lovecraftian themes such as Last Threshold. This is an easy one to recommend to fans of the genre looking for a visual novel with a hand-painted art style and an interesting story that can be completed in a few hours. Last Threshold is available on Nintendo Switch at a budget price of only $4.99.
