Freshly Frosted from The Quantum Astrophysics Guild is a colorful puzzle game with donuts at the center of it all. The game is a chill, zen-like puzzle experience in which your character is trying to unwind and relax by imagining there’s a huge donut factory in the sky. You’ll be taking on 144 levels as you do something that sounds simple: get from point A to point B. Connect the oven to the delivery counter by placing conveyor belts, and you’re set!
While donuts are delicious on their own, we all know that they taste even better with frosting! Because of this, when you lay down the conveyor belt, you’ll need to consider how the donuts will need to travel through the factory so that they can get some frosting on top of them. Oh, but you shouldn’t forget the sprinkles! Just remember that it’s frosting first, and then the sprinkles, or else they won’t stick. And if you want to add some whipped cream, well… that goes after the sprinkles! And if you want cherries on top, those go on the donut after the whipped cream.
Before you even get started, the game will have you select from the different accessibility options it has to offer. You can change the UI scale, activate or deactivate background effects, select if the text progression is automatic or manual, if the input mode will be toggle or hold, and if there should be an input cooldown or not. I do suggest that you increase the UI scale since this will make for an easier time with Freshly Frosted. You can then go into the settings menu and also select if the narrative and tutorials should be activated or deactivated, if the controller should vibrate and if Impatient Mode should be activated, which will considerably speed up the whole process.
The controls are easy to understand. You’ll move your cursor up, down, left, and right with the left analog stick or the D-Pad. You can place conveyors by pressing and holding down the X button. To run and stop the factory, all you need to do is press the Square button. The Circle button will allow you to clear the conveyor to reevaluate things. You can undo and redo things with the L1 and R1 buttons, respectively. If you want to start fresh, you can reset the board by pressing the Triangle button. And if you need to speed things up, you can do so with the R2 button.
At first, you’ll only have to worry about completing a single process, with one oven and one delivery counter to worry about. But once you move onto the second box of donuts, you’re going to have to juggle more than one oven and delivery counter pair to consider. You’ll have to check the orders you have on the upper left corner of the screen so that you can see what donut types you need to work on so that you can complete the orders with the conveyor belts you’ll set out for each stage. On that note, if you’re feeling stuck, you can activate a hint to get you going in the right direction.
There are a ton of trophies for you to unlock as you work towards adding a new Platinum trophy to your collection. The list for Freshly Frosted includes 64 Bronze trophies and a lonely Gold trophy. Trophies will pop at a steady pace as you solve specific puzzles in each box and complete all puzzles in each box. The Gold trophy unlocks once you’ve finished every single one of the 120 puzzles in Freshly Frosted. The rest of the trophies unlock when you complete things such as using a hint, skipping a level, solving a puzzle with symmetry to deliver a donut with all toppings, watching a completed puzzle for a while, or creating a factory that takes more than 250 steps to complete, to name some examples.
Freshly Frosted is a colorful puzzle game with donuts that offers a very chill experience you can enjoy at your own pace. New elements are introduced at a slow but steady pace, allowing you to get the hang of things before the next element is added, which helps to keep the whole experience feeling fresh from start to finish. Freshly Frosted is out on PlayStation 4 with a $9.99 asking price.
