Horror cooking simulator Ravenous Devils from Troglobytes Games, Hound Picked Games and Bad Vices Games is one to check out on PlayStation 5. You’ll control Hildred and her husband Percival, who have moved into town to escape from a life of poverty as they try to make it big in a city where crime, corruption, and poverty are around every corner. They decide to open a pub on the main floor of their new home, which will be managed by Hildred, while Percival sets up as a tailor on the upper floor.
The basement has a lovely kitchen where meat can be processed into delicious meals for potential customers. Unfortunately, the price of meat has gone sky high, and with the pair running out of meat to keep one of their businesses going strong, they decide to take a rather drastic approach: murder people to use their meat for cooking food! Oh, and Percival will also recycle their clothes in order to sell some of them at the tailor shop. It seems the house was previously owned by a well-known barber – a direct nod to Sweeney Todd. You’ll also find a nod to Little Shop of Horrors, as well as other horror films.
Your journey with Ravenous Devils will start once you throw the first corpse down the trap doors. You’ll move a cursor around each area with the left analog stick, interacting with stuff as needed by pressing the X button. You can move the camera around with the right analog stick and can zoom in and out as needed by pressing up and down on the right analog stick. You can move between rooms with the D-Pad. Grab and carry the corpse with Mildred and throw it into the meat grinder to get some meat for completing recipes.
Press the Square button, and you’ll be able to check out the recipes book to see what you can cook with the ingredients at hand. Perhaps you’d like to make a meat pie? For this, you’re going to need some freshly minced meat as well as some flour. Once you’ve added the ingredients to the tray, you’ll need to put everything in the already heated oven to cook it just right. Pay attention to the progress bar above the oven to know when the meat pie is ready so that you can take it out and serve it.
As for the tailor shop part of the experience? Percival will kindly greet every new customer that arrives at his shop, taking them to the backroom for… measurements. After taking care of a client, don’t forget to use the mop and bucket to clean everything up since you can’t bring a new customer in until there’s no blood left on the floor! To make some new clothes, use the pieces of fabric at your disposal and use the sewing machine to your right to create new clothes to set on the mannequin at the store.
The money you earn from your hard work can be put to good use in order to improve your whole operation. You could, for example, fix the other two ovens in the kitchen so that you can cook more than one dish at a time. Maybe you’d like to add some tables to the pub so that you can serve more customers. You could also get some help for the pub so that you can focus on cooking. Maybe you’d also like to add a cat to the couple’s home? And once you get a peculiar plant and feed it, things will really start to get crazy!
Variety is the spice of life, so you’ll need to add new ingredients for your meals, as well as new clothes to sell to potential customers. Get a table to make some steaks or add a sausage stuffer – after all, man tastes like a pig! Since you’ll be juggling more than one objective at once as you kill customers, remove their clothes, make new clothes to sell, take their meat, and cook meals, you might also want to spend some money on improving the sewing machine speed or set up some extra mannequins at the tailor shop to have more clothes on display. Speaking of clothes, you could also purchase new looks for Mildred and Percival if you have some extra money to spend.
And now, let’s take a moment to talk about the trophies. Ravenous Devils has a full trophy list with a Platinum trophy. You’ll work on a list with 8 Bronze trophies, 8 Silver trophies, and 7 Gold trophies. There are some trophies that will unlock as you progress through the game’s story and beat the game. As you work on making lots of minced meat, meat, and sausages, more trophies will pop. There’s one trophy for playing ten times with the pig-shaped sign outside of the pub. And if you spend a whole day without killing someone, you’ll get another trophy!
Ravenous Devils is a horror cooking simulator experience with a dash of tailoring on the side. It features a simple but fun gameplay loop with new elements as you upgrade your tools and buy new ingredients to unlock new recipes to serve to your clients. The game is out now on PlayStation 5 with a $4.99 asking price. It’s also available on PlayStation 4 as a separate purchase for the same price.
