In the Tako Kingdom deep under the sea, soup is the only mundane meal everybody eats. But Princess Takorita is deeply dissatisfied with this, and she demands a tasty new dish to spice up her life.
Takorita Meets Fries is a visual novel following Takorita, a Princess of the world at the bottom of the seas. She’s had enough of eating only seaweed and soup and declares she wants to go to the surface to discover new dishes. At first, her parents – the King and Queen – are reluctant, but they eventually accept as long as she’s accompanied by a guard. This is where Mer, a merman (that would be a male mermaid), is introduced, but there’s a major issue: being a merman means he has a tail and can’t walk on land. Takorita quickly finds a solution to this issue.
She’ll quickly make new friends, and discover french fries – as per the game’s title – and even go on to discover new spices for the main dish presented in this game. Being a visual novel, the main gameplay is reading the scenes, and I must admit I was surprised by the low amount of choices during the story. There are only three branching choices throughout the whole story, and the first one won’t be taken until you’ve played around 20 minutes. There weren’t a lot of choices to select from, but I was pleased to discover that this whole game can be beaten/read in about 45 minutes total, which makes it easier to complete than some other visual novels that span for multiple hours. Each of the chapters in the game lasts between 5 to 10 minutes.
The graphics are colorful and look like they were hand-drawn by a kid, which is original and great to look at. The background music, however, is very average, and some short themes loops were even annoying. The sole sound effect is also terrible too, and get used to that suspense sound effect because you’ll be hearing it over and over again.
Given that this is a Ratalaika Games release, you can expect a quick new Platinum trophy in a few minutes if you’re following a guide. If you do this, you can get a Platinum trophy in under 5 minutes! It’s a short list with two Silver trophies and 11 Gold trophies, with all of them related to completing the different chapters. If you have a PlayStation 5, you can also get a second Platinum trophy thanks to the game being a Cross-Buy release, each one with its own trophy list.
Takorita Meets Fries is a cheerful adventure about discovering a new dish and making friends, and it can be completed in around 45 minutes with the normal reading configuration. I liked the setting and world of this adventure, although I would have liked to see more branches throughout the adventure. If you’re mostly looking for new Platinum trophies to add to your list, then take note that the adventure can be speedrun in around 5 minutes.
