Fire Tonight from Reptoid Games and Way Down Deep is a charming bite-sized adventure game on Nintendo Switch. It tells the story of Maya and Devin, who are, unfortunately, separated due to a huge fire in the city. The game is set way back in 1990, which means there’s no cellphone and no internet, so after a blackout, there’s no way for them to get in touch other than meeting in person. Devin remains at his apartment, while Maya rushes out onto the streets to try and find a way to get rid of the fire and get closer and closer to Devin.
The game has been inspired by the song of the same name from Information Society, from their 1990 album Hack. To give you an idea of why this is the case, here are the song’s lyrics:
Well, there’s a hot wind blowing tonight in the east,
And I heard that the park is filled tonight with police.
On the radio there’s nothing but a man saying
To stay inside.
Well, I remember what you said on the telephone,
That you didn’t feel like it was safe to stay alone.
And you would get yourself to me if you could find
A way across the line.
But there’s fire tonight on your side of town,
Orange light in the sky without a sound.
Fire tonight on your side of town.
I watch and wait for you to come around.
Well, there’s a faint sound of sirens tonight in the air,
And I heard that the downtown streets tonight are bare.
On the TV here they’re telling me the roads are all
Closed down.
You said that if you couldn’t take the car you’d walk
Instead.
It was the last thing you said before the line went dead.
And now I’m waiting by the window holding all the things
Of yours I’ve found.
But there’s fire tonight on your side of town,
Orange light in the sky without a sound.
Fire tonight on your side of town.
I watch and wait for you to come around.
I know we always said that we were free.
I know we never thought this would succeed.
But now your face is all that I can see.
But there’s fire tonight on your side of town,
Orange light in the sky without a sound.
Fire tonight on your side of town.
I watch and wait for you to come around.
You can move Maya with the left analog stick and rotate the camera when possible with the right one. The A button will be for interacting with objects or people, and there’s a special ability that Maya can use to put her magical walkman to good use to get rid of some of the fire in the city. This walkman will run out of batteries very quickly, but the good news is that you can find new ones by searching around each area. Devin will be part of the more traditional point and click segments, during which you’ll move a cursor around the screen and press the A button to interact with objects as you rotate the view in his apartment.
Fire Tonight is a charming, bite-sized adventure with a colorful look, based on a song of the same name from the 1990s by Information Society. It’s a short one that will take you between 1-2 hours to complete at most, as you alternate between controlling Maya in the 3D segments and Devin as he looks around his apartment, remembering different moments from their relationship, as well as an autorunner segment during which Maya will be riding on skates as she rushes to Devin’s side. Fire Tonight is out on Nintendo Switch with a budget $5.99 asking price.
