[PS4Blog.net Interview] Greg Lobanov On Chicory: A Colorful Tale

by EdEN, Owner

We’ll be working on a review for Chicory: A Colorful Tale, so I got in touch with Greg Lobanov to talk a bit about the game. Come check it out!

PS4B: Hi Greg! Thanks for taking the time to join us today at PS4Blog.net. How’s everything on your end?

Things are going well. I’ve been trying to take it easy with the game out. I started playing volleyball.

PS4B: Indeed! Chicory: A Colorful Tale is out on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. How would you describe the game to someone who’s never heard about it?

Chicory is a Zelda-style adventure game in a coloring book world. There’s a magic brush that gives the world color, wielded by a famous artist named Chicory. But she vanishes at the start of the game, and all the color in the world vanishes with her. You play as her number one fan, using her brush in her absence to fill things in and figure out what happened.

PS4B: The lovely Wandersong – a.k.a. your previous game – had a big focus on music and sound, while Chicory sets its sights on bringing this coloring book black and white world to life. What made you decide to have Chicory focus on the contrast of colors and how this can affect the world around us?

I love drawing a lot and, at the outset, had a genuine curiosity if I could make a game in which drawing was your main way of interacting with the world. I hadn’t played one like that, which I found satisfying before, so I figured it might be impossible. But eventually, I figured out an idea that became Chicory. I think it’s really fun and natural to make games about coloring or making music; it’s something everyone in the world can enjoy doing.

PS4B: Last time around, Wandersong got a lovely physical release by way of Limited Run Games – along with a gorgeous Limited Edition, which I own in my collection – so I was wondering if there are any plans for Chicory: A Colorful Tale to also get a physical release on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation 5.

We can’t say anything about this right now. But we have a lot of plans and ideas for things, lol. I would recommend folks follow our newsletter if they want updates on things like this.

PS4B: I really enjoyed the soundtrack for Chicory: A Colorful Tale. Is there any way for fans to buy it?

Yup! You can get it on Bandcamp. It’s also on Spotify / Apple Music / all the things.

PS4B: And that’s all the time we have for today. Is there something else you’d like to add before we go?

The soundtrack really is very good. You should listen to it if nothing else.
