RIDE 4 is now out on PlayStation 5! After launching last year on PlayStation 4, it has now gotten an update on Sony’s new home console. And yes, if you already own RIDE 4 on PlayStation 4, you can get this PS5 upgrade for free! I was unfamiliar with the series, but I love racing games, so I thought I would take this out for a lap or two to see what’s under the hood.

Playing RIDE 4 on my PlayStation 5, the first thing I noticed was the super speedy load times thanks to the internal SSD built into the PS5, which kind of blew me away! RIDE 4 helps you quickly set up an avatar so that you can get the race going strong. From there, you are dropped right into a time trial. RIDE 4 does not hold your hand and will expect you to quickly pick up the pace. It’s a game that leans more into the sim side of the equation than on offering an arcade-style experience.

RIDE 4 Review - 1

As I started to play RIDE 4, I was definitely struggling with what I was expected to do since I was leaning in too much during turns, wiping out, or I was not leaning in enough during turns, which means I was hitting walls… or wiping out. The game is not very inviting to those new to the racing sim genre, which can certainly be a problem if you don’t have much experience. I had to take a deep breath, step back, and return to the game with a new mindset to be able to take on the starting set of laps that stood before me.

But then, once I managed to complete them, I got a great feeling of accomplishment that made it possible to push forward as I took a dive into the many gameplay options. There’s the always important Career Mode, which is where you’ll spend most of your time, as you chose from the different circuits from three different continents. There is definitely a lot of content in this one!

I loaded up my race against my first CPU opponents, and boy was I not ready for it! Racing on my own was hard enough and adding AI-controlled opponents certainly didn’t make it easier. Opponents can end up colliding with you, which is never a good thing. They will also make sure to capitalize on any mistake you make, gaining a good advantage on the race… which you might not be able to recover from.

RIDE 4 Review - 2

I will say that so far, RIDE 4 is one of the best games I have played to make good use of the DualSense adaptive triggers and haptic feedback. When you push on the triggers, you can feel it pushing back against you, which is a great feeling when you’re racing down the path as you try to stay in the race. I was expecting the game to only use the basic rumble features already in place on the PlayStation 4 version, so I was pleasantly surprised.

Visually RIDE 4 blew me away as well. Everything about the game is gorgeous. The bikes are heavy on the detail and look great both up close as well as while racing. What really took my breath away was the track design. When I say that the game has a life-like look, I mean it. Since the tracks are based on real racing tracks, I went online to check them out, and I’m here to report that the in-game tracks look very close to their real-life counterparts. I tested this by using the included Photo Mode to take a still of the game, posting it to my social media feeds, and I had several comments asking me where I had taken the picture, even though there’s a RIDE 4 watermark on the image. That’s how good the game looks!

RIDE 4 Review - 3

RIDE 4 is a gorgeous racing sim game that is either going to click with you or that you’re going to hate. This one does not hold your hand, so if you don’t have much experience with racing sim games, this one is not going to show you the ropes. The team did a great job of revamping the game’s look and implementing DualSense control upgrades to give us the definitive version of RIDE 4. If you’re a fan of racing sims, then you should definitely check this one out on PlayStation 5.
