Strawberry Vinegar from Ratalaika Games and ebi-hime is a colorful visual novel with six different endings, a focus on food – and how delicious it is – and a demon girl who suddenly pops up out of nowhere. Nine-year-old Sakuraba Rie is a grumpy and cynical girl who has no friends at school. One day, she meets Licia, who has been stealing her family’s food. Licia is the aforementioned demon who has popped out of nowhere, and she starts to have an impact on Rie as she eats more and more delicious food – miso soup, cookies, chestnut pudding, shaved ice, cotton candy, pancakes, omelette rice, hamburger steak, and more!
If you’re new to the visual novel genre, then you need to know that games in this genre certainly do justice to this category. You’re going to be doing a lot of reading as characters interact and move the story forward. Most visual novels feature some branching paths that you can take by picking one of the different options on offer. Because of this, you’ll be pressing one button over and over as you read a ton of dialogue, with some visual novels featuring voice acting. Other visual novels don’t feature any choices to make and are long novels you experience in video game form. Strawberry Vinegar is of the “read a lot of dialogue and make choices at many moments to take on branching paths” variety.
Trophy-wise, Strawberry Vinegar is a visual novel with a full trophy list that will reward you with a Platinum trophy once you’ve completed all objectives. There is no PS Vita version for the game, so there’s only going to be one Platinum in your future. With the game’s focus on food, it was to be expected that the trophy list would have a focus on marking the moments in which you get to buy, order, bake, or cook, the different dishes showcased by Strawberry Vinegar. On top of this, there are trophies that will unlock as you reach the six different endings in the game.
Strawberry Vinegar is a colorful and fun visual novel with a great art style, fun writing, and lots of food to feast your eyes on. As you progress through the game, you’ll unlock the gorgeous food on the art gallery, and will also unlock concept art for the game, as well as a behind-the-scenes look at the creative writing process of ebi-hime. Add a Platinum trophy, and this is an easy one to recommend. Strawberry Vinegar is out now on PlayStation 4 for $9.99.
