Mechstermination Force is out this week, so I got in touch with Bertil Hörberg to talk a bit about the game. Come check it out!
PS4Blog: Hi! Good morning. Thank you for joining us today. Could you please help us get started by telling our readers a bit about yourself and your work?
My name is Bertil Hörberg, head of the Swedish indie studio Hörberg Productions. I used to work as a solo developer for a long time and created the Gunman Clive games, but for this title I have expanded the studio into a small 3 person team, but I’m still responsible for a lot of different parts of the development, including the design, all the programming, animation as well as running the studio.
PS4B: Mechstermination Force is making its way to the Nintendo Switch next month. How would you describe the game to someone who’s never heard about it?
Mechstermination Force is an action platform boss rush game. You can think of it as a mix of Contra and Shadow of the Colossus. It’s all about climbing and getting on top of giant bosses to find their weak spots, but with the arcade action 2D gameplay of Contra instead of the cinematic and somber feel of Shadow of the Colossus.
PS4B: How long did it take you to develop Mechstermination Force? Where there any particular hurdles or challenges you had to overcome during development?
The game has been in development for 1.5 years, which for me is actually a really long project. I’m not built for longer projects. However given that the game is all about boss fights, there is very little content that can be reused to pad the playtime so creating a full and satisfying experience in that time with only bosses took a lot of work. And the bosses are all very varied, and some of them needed their own special systems to be implemented for their animations, movement, collision, etc.
PS4B: Are you considering developing some additional content for the game to be made available as DLC or an update, or do you think the game feels just the way it is?
No, there are no plans for additional content, mostly because after 1.5 years I’m eager to move on to something else.
PS4B: And that’s all the time we have for today. Is there something else you’d like to add before we go?
There is still a lot of cool stuff we haven’t shown as we tried not to spoil too much in the trailer, so please check it out. I hope people will enjoy all the surprises and different gameplay mechanics.
