[Beyond PlayStation] Atari Flashback Classics Review

by EdEN, Owner

The Atari Flashback Collection for Nintendo Switch brings us 150 games in a single package. Learn more about this retrotastic pack in our Atari Flashback Collection review!

Atari has previously released two volumes in their Atari Flashback Collection series, and it has recently released the third volume in the series on PlayStation 4 with 50 more games for you to enjoy. We now get a new entry in the series for the Nintendo Switch that is very special since for only $39.99 we’re getting a game that is a collection of all three volumes on PlayStation 4 in a single cartridge/download, which means that with your purchase you’ll gain access to 150 Atari games!

Getting 150 games for such a low price is a lot of bang for your buck, and it means you’ll certainly find dozens of games to enjoy. The collection is great for those of you who, like myself, got to play several of these games on original hardware way back in the day, but it’s also a solid option for those who are new to Atari and their huge backlog of games for their arcade and home console hardware. The games are arranged alphabetically and split into arcade and hime console lists, so out of the 11 pages the first three list all arcade games, with Atari 2600 and Atari 5200 games starting on said third page. This does mean we get some “repeats,” so to speak, in these lists. For example, the collection includes the Arcade version of Asteroids (as well as of Asteroids Deluxe) along with the Atari 2600 and Atari 5200 versions of Asteroids. Collector and completionists are going to love getting all versions if the game in one package, but some of you might not be as thrilled.

Controls are easy to understand for all 2600 games in the Atari Flashback Classics collection since the Atari 2600 used one joystick and one button, with the Atari arcade games also having a small set of control inputs. The 5200 controller was different since it also had an analog joystick, a numeric pad, and two buttons on each side of the controller. Because of the numeric keypad, games for the 5200 included plastic card overlays that you could place over the keypad to see what each button would do for that particular game.

The collection features some welcomed added featured such as local an online multiplayer so that you can take on other players from around the world, online leaderboards for you to aim at the top spot as you try to show your skills, as well as a solid user interface (UI) to give you the option to play the games with borders and backgrounds at home or on the go so that you can customize each game’s look and feel just right. We also get manuals for all of the home console games which, if you ask me, are on their own worth the price of admission since they offer hundreds and hundreds of pages worth of manuals that we’d otherwise not have access to.

The Atari Flashback Classics collection on Nintendo Switch also offers a set of 64 in-game achievements. These achievements include objectives such as playing every game in the collection, taking out an entire Millipede with DDT in the arcade version, achieving a commander rating in Star Raiders, beating the computer in Atari Baseball, achieving a score of 300,000 in Yar’s Return, retrieving at least six treasures in Aquaventure, doubling your money in Blackjack, eliminating all the mushrooms in a level of arcade Centipede, getting to level 19 in arcade Missile Command, and more.
