Nickelodeon Kart Racers from GameMill Entertainment is, as the name suggests, a kart racer featuring characters from the cable channel. Learn more about it in our Nickelodeon Kart Racers review!
The game includes 12 characters in total from four different Nickelodeon franchises: three from SpongeBob SquarePants (Spongebob, Patrick, and Sandy), three from Rugrats (Tommy, Angelica, and Reptar), two from Hey Arnold! (Arnold and Helga), and all four Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, and (Leon, Raph, Donnie, and Mikey). You can go at it and race on your own, or you can have another three people join in for some fun races around the included 24 tracks that will take you to Arnold’s school, Bikini Bottom, Tommy Pickle’s house, the NYC sewers, and more.
As for the game’s controls, you can accelerate with the ZR or R buttons and can use the left analog stick to steer your vehicle. As you drive around each track, you can grab items from special containers which you can then launch with the B button to try and get the upper hand on your opponents. The X button is used for activating a turbo boost that will use your slime bar, located at the left of the screen, to allow you to go forward at full speed. You’ll also need to watch out for any of the hazards that are on the track that will get in your way, as well as use slime that will be dumped on the track every now and then – you know, to keep with the Nickelodeon overall theme – to fill up your slime bar for your boost.
Depending on the situation at hand, your ride will change from a four-wheel vehicle when riding around a solid track to a thing with skis so that you can go over areas with liquid, to having wings so that you can fly over larger jumps. For some races you’ll need to get to the finish line in the best spot possible, while in others there will be a timer that will countdown from 18, and whichever racer is on the last spot will be booted from the race, thus forcing you to aim at finishing that type of race in the first spot.
Every race you complete will add experience points for your profile. The higher your position when you finish a race, the more experience points you will get. Once you get enough experience points to level up, you’ll get 60 seconds to do a victory lap in which you can collect coins and treasure boxes for unlocking new tires, engines, spoilers, and more for your vehicles. But this is not the only way you can get new stuff for your vehicle since the coins you collect can be used to purchase tires, engines, spoilers, skis, or even custom paint jobs.
If you’re looking for a fun karting experience on the Nintendo Switch, are on a budget, and your kids love the cartoon series from Nickelodeon, then this $39.99 release is definitely going to make them very happy. My kids are certainly fans of Rugrats, SpongeBob SquarePants and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, so they ended up gravitating to those characters when playing the game for many hours.
