We’re currently working on a review for Black Bird, so I got in touch with Onion Games to talk about the game’s development for Nintendo Switch. Come check it out!
PS4Blog: Good afternoon! Thank you for joining us today. Could you please help us begin this interview by telling our readers a bit about yourself and your work?
My name is Yoshiro Kimura. I am the chief of Onion Games and the director for Black Bird. I am still now a traveler and game designer.
My recent projects include Dandy Dungeon and Million Onion Hotel on mobile.
My last game for a Nintendo console was Little King’s Story for Wii, and that was a long time ago. We recently finally released a new game called Black Bird for the Nintendo Switch!
PS4B: On that note, with Black Bird out on Nintendo Switch, wow would you describe the game to someone who’s never heard about it?
This is the story of a hapless child. She is reborn as the creepy Black Bird, and this bird is one of the great calamities in this kingdom. You can play and become the BLACK BIRD and destroy the world, killing all members of the stupid human race!
PS4B: How long did it take to develop the game? Where there any particular hurdles or challenges you had to overcome?
I remember I came up with the concept for BLACK BIRD in the winter of 2013. After that, the first time we showed a prototype for the game was in 2016 – we made that in 2 weeks?
As for the version that has just released, we had been working on it from January to September 2018.
We are also working on Dandy dungeon, and Million Onion Hotel… so real development started this year.
As for any particular hurdles? There are many of course:
* Studying about the old Shump era and the new era, to find my own way.
* Find out the proper balance of adjustment for beginners, as well as the balance adjustments for core ShMUP players.
* And my eye was so tired. You know, because I am such a ridiculously old man making an action game?
Have to laugh at myself every now and then! I should have built this type kind of game when I was young, but I decided to do it now…
PS4B: With the game out on Nintendo Switch, are you currently working on a new project?
Yes, but I do not know what will happen to them! I want to make a new story for a game. I want to make an RPG. But who knows! Will Black Bird’s sales be good? Can Onion Games continue for one more year?
If I can feel Black Bird’s sales are OK, then we’ll have a delightful future!!
If not, then it’s not mean to be.
Please play my game while I am still alive. And please buy it if you like it!
PS4B: And that’s all the time we have for today. Once again, thank you for joining us for the interview. Is there something else you’d like to add before we go?
You are welcome! And I’d also like to say thank you.
What I need to say at the end is: Please play the game, and if you like this game, please tell your friend! Please knock on the door of your neighbors and randomly tell them that Black Bird is a pretty good video game!
And, to all of your readers… I need your help. This is not a Kickstarter, but the need is the same. We’re a tiny team of creators living of a situation similar to having a Kickstarter, and we live through it every single day.
Did you know that?
