Xenon Valkyrie+ is an enhanced version of Diabolical Mind’s Xenon Valkyrie, released by Cowcat, the dev of Demetrios: The BIG Cynical Adventure. How does this game fare on Vita? Find out in our Xenon Valkyrie+ Review!
Xenon Valkyrie is a rogue-lite platformer game with RPG elements in which you must fight to the deepest part of a moon and halt the plans of a wicked witch.
Obtain many weapons as you fight through a unique, randomly-generated world every time you play. Encounter many characters, stores and enemies that tell a legendary story.
With traditional graphics and high quality chiptune music, level up and get the amazing power of the Xenon Valkyrie!
Xenon Valkyrie+ – Launch Trailer
This is a double review for Xenon Valkyrie+. The game was played by EdEN and Ceidz. This review presents what they both had to say.
The first thing that is apparent when the game is booted up is the 16-bit art style and soundtrack of Xenon Valkyrie+. I’m a fan of this type of games, so I was definitely up for to trying this one out! A quick note about a feature in the options called “interpolation” that smooths the edges of the pixels, so they look nicer – I preferred the default setting, but I can see why some people would prefer the interpolated graphics.
I then jumped into the gameplay…. and I had mixed opinions. The game doesn’t hold your hand, and you’ll be free exploring your first level a few moments after booting up the game. I was immediately confused when I began playing as I was dropped somewhere and had to …. do generic stuff. Kill enemies, find treasure chests, the usual. I then fell into what felt like a mini-cavern and got stuck there. I needed a moment to figure out that I could wall-jump to get out of my predicament.
The navigation in this game is harsh, and the game doesn’t forgive it when you do a wrong move or make mistakes. You’ll die pretty quickly the first times you play the game, but you’ll get better at it and will be able to reach further into the adventure. Once you die, it’s game over, and the character is proper dead, and you’ll go back to the base and have to restart the campaign.
For me, this game was way too hard, and lacked some basic explanations about important actions you need to know more of in the gameplay department. I played the game some more and did new runs, but I eventually shelved it since it wasn’t for me and I doubt I’ll pick it up again.
Xenon Valkyrie+ is a pixeltastic hardcore roguelike release on PlayStation Vita that you’re either going to love or hate. As you’ve read above, this game didn’t end up grabbing Ceidz’s attention, but I’m here to say that if you know exactly what you’re getting into, then you’re going to have a great time with this portable action platformer.
If you’re not a fan of roguelikes or hardcore platformers, then the game’s difficulty at the start will feel pretty high, but worry not since a little trial and error during your first couple of runs will go along way. You’ll need to take things slowly at first since every hit you get will deal massive damage to your character. Until, that is, you manage to level up a bit! Every time you level up you’ll get some points you can use at special statues to increase your stats, so be sure to increase your HP and defense at first so that you can then focus on your attack damage so that you can make short work of most enemies.
Each level features an exit you need to reach to go to the next stage in the game, and you’ll eventually start to run into bosses that will test your skills and show you how good you really are. Defeating each of the bosses will allow you to reach a new story area where you’ll get to interact with NPC, and once a boss is taken down, you’ll get a trophy for your efforts.
Speaking of trophies, the game features a Platinum trophy at the end of the road, and the list will definitely challenge you in full since there is no way of getting all of them in a single run due to a handful that require you to play the game a particular way. I won’t spoil things here, but rest assured that this list will certainly keep you busy for a while!
As you’ve seen from this review, Xenon Valkyrie+ is a game you’re either going to love or hate. If you’re a fan of the roguelike genre and favor hardcore platformers, then you’ll feel right at home with this game. But if you’re new to the genre and don’t like replaying the same sections, even if the content is randomized during every new run, then this one isn’t going to win you over.
