We’re playing Fantastic Contraption on for review, so we got in touch with Radial Games to talk about the game’s development for Sony’s virtual reality headset.
PS4Blog: Welcome to PS4Blog.net! Thank you for joining us. Let’s get this started with a short introduction. Could you please tell our readers a bit about yourself and your work at Radial Games?
Sure! My name is Andy Moore, and I am Captain of Radial Games. We made Fantastic Contraption in partnership with Northway Games; interestingly, the game used to be a browser game nearly ten years ago! We just launched on PlayStation VR and couldn’t be happier.
PS4B: And with PlayStation VR in full swing, releasing a game for Sony’s virtual reality hardware makes a lot of sense. What is Fantastic Contraption all about?
Fantastic Contraption is a physics sandbox puzzle game with a simple goal: on each island, get the pink thing into the goal area. How you solve the puzzles is up to you, and it’s a blast watching people come up with wacky solutions that we never thought of!
PS4B: How long did it take to develop the game for PlayStation VR? Was there anything left on the cutting floor during that time? Any particular challenges during development?
It took us about a year of careful consideration to create the PlayStation VR experience. The primary challenges were the design considerations; for example, with PlayStation VR we first designed for a seated experience, and designed an experience that feels similar to building models on a virtual table in front of you, which is a ton of fun to play with.
We didn’t want to limit the experience to being seated, though, and so we included a special world, Resize Island, where you can resize the game world to your liking.
PS4B: With the game now out for all to enjoy, what is next for the team? Will you be working on more content for Fantastic Contraption or are you working on a new game?
We’re straight into working on some stuff that we can’t wait to talk about. Some of it might end up in Fantastic Contraption, and the rest is super-duper secret. We’ll tell all soon! We have a super secret emailing list you can sign up for by clicking right here.
PS4B: And now it is time for us to go. Once again, thank you for joining us for this interview. Would you like to add anything else?
Send us videos of your puzzle solutions to our Twitter! We love seeing them!
