[PS4Blog.net Interview] MidBoss On 2064: Read Only Memories | PS4Blog.net
With 2064: Read Only Memories releasing on PlayStation 4 in a couple of weeks we got in touch with Matt Conn from MidBoss to catch up on the game.
PS4Blog.net: Hi Matt! Good to have you back with us at PS4blog.net How have you been?
Things have been super busy! Working on the console release has been quite an experience and honestly a great opportunity for us. This is really the sort of thing that you have to do to fully understand. Aside from that, I’ve been making fairly regular trips to a lovely place called Japan to meet with and spend time with some wonderful people out there.
PS4B: We’re currently playing 2064: Read Only Memories on PS4 for review, and that means the game is really coming to Sony’s home console on January 17, 2017! Last time we talked about the potential for cross-buy between the PS4 and Vita versions of the game. Has that been finalized yet?
It’s true! The game is real and on that console! We were really hoping that pushing back the date would let us launch on PS4 and PSvita together, but we are still running into issues with getting it to work properly on Vita. Fans have been very patient, and since the content is done, we wanted to release first on PS4 and PC and get it into people’s hands. Sony’s been super helpful and generous with us, and they’re gonna help us do whatever we can that’s best for the players. Most of us on the team are actually big Vita people, so we want a Vita release just as much as everyone else does and we hope we’ll have something to announce soon, as well as potentially supporting a cross-buy!
PS4B: As you mention, January 17 is the release date for the PlayStation 4 version, and the Vita version is still being worked on. How far along is the PS Vita release? Do you have an estimate on when it will be launching?
Yes, the PS4 version is definitely coming out on January 17th. Unfortunately, it’s not really possible to answer how far along the Vita release is. One of the things we’ve learned about working with consoles is that it’s extremely hard to know what the scope of a problem is. A bug may take a month to solve, or it may have an overnight fix. After that, there might be a completely different bug. That’s why we can’t say for sure just yet. We’re actively working on it and we’ll continue to until we have things solved.
PS4B: Looking at all the love that 2064: ROM has been getting, I was wondering if you were considering a physical copy of the game with, say, the folks at Limited Run Games, or maybe with a publisher!
We’ve certainly been talking about that, especially since fans have been asking about it as well! Honestly, I think I’d flip out if I hold a physical copy of a Playstation 4 version of 2064: Read Only Memories. Teenage-me would freak. It’s definitely something I want to do, but it’s really going to come down to how well the game does on PS4. I’m grateful that the game is well-liked, but it’s also going to depend on folks getting the word out about it.
These days with so many games coming out it’s easy to miss an indie. We honestly wouldn’t have gotten anywhere if fans of the game hadn’t been so vocal about it when it came out. At this point, there’s already even a plush of Turing that you can get at Sanshee, which is a dream come true. So, we’ll see, but I’m pretty hopeful!! It’s something we want to do, and if sales are good at launch, its something we hope to pursue.
PS4B: What’s next for the team? Are there any new games you’re currently working on?
We’ll see! Right now we’re definitely focused on making sure that every bit of 2064 goodness comes out just right, which means lots of playtesting and making sure there aren’t any details that weren’t ironed out. There’s a lot of hidden areas and variables to test and a surprising amount of work that went into this new version. That being said, since most of the work at this point is double-checking code, some of our creative team has been tossing around a few ideas that… we’re really excited to begin exploring. Not only that, but thanks to Read Only Memories we’ve had the chance to meet some very gifted and established developers and, depending on how the game does, we might just be looking to do something a little bit bigger. Fingers crossed!
PS4B: Once again, thanks for your time. Do you want to add anything else before we go?
I guess just that I hope people like the game and I encourage people to play around with it. We put a ton of work into it, and we really love what we’ve made. It’s important for us to be able to share what we’ve done with folks and if you like it we encourage you to tell your friends. Discovering games you might like is getting harder and harder, and this is especially true of good indies, so if you like a game make sure everyone knows. Also: We hope everyone falls in love with Turing, TOMCAT and all the residents of Neo-SF in 2064: Read Only Memories on Jan 17 on PS4! 😀 You can also follow us on Twitter at @ROM2064 and @wearemidboss for more info on our upcoming projects.
