[PS4Blog.net Interview] Turtle Sandbox On Cannon Brawl

by EdEN, Owner

Tracey had a lot of fun with Cannon Brawl when she reviewed the game, so I got in touch with Turtle Sandbox to talk about the game’s development and release on the PlayStation 4.

PS4Blog: Welcome to PS4blog.net! Thank you for joining us today. Can you please get us started by telling our audience a bit about who you are and what your role is?

I’m Peter Angstadt, I did coding and game design on Cannon Brawl.

PS4B: Cannon Brawl, a very fun game, is now on PlayStation 4. How would you describe the game to our readers?

It’s a blend of real time strategy, 2D artillery, and destructible terrain. To be honest, it’s a hard game to describe because its a unique combo of lots of different mechanics. Best I’ve heard is that it’s “starcraft meets worms.” But what does that mean? Maybe it’s better I describe how you might feel when you play: curious, puzzled, smart, compelled, tense, mad, frantic, determined, and joyous.

PS4B: The Worms influence is strong in this one, but I do wonder what other more obscure games you’ve drawn inspiration from and why you decided to pay homage to said games. Care to expand on that?

Cannon Brawl was actually more heavily influenced by Gunbound, which I played way too much in college. The army selection in Cannon Brawl is inspired from the deck building card game Dominion where you can pick a small set of cards from a much larger amount of choices. The trick is to find good combos. I also played Starcraft 2 and counted the seconds between actions to get a feel for the pacing in the beginning of a match. That information directly influenced how we tuned Cannon Brawl’s own pacing.

PS4B: It’s great to see an indie release with a full trophy count. What is the estimate on your end for how long it will take players to get the Platinum trophy for Cannon Brawl?

A big thanks to BlitWorks for handling the Steam to PS4 trophy conversion! As for a time estimate, it’s hard to say since it depends on how good you are at the game. It’ll definitely require some effort!

PS4B: Is there a chance for more Cannon Brawl content to be released for the game as DLC or is the studio now focusing on a new project?

Perhaps, but we’re all working on new projects right now. Theresa Duringer, the other half of the Cannon Brawl team, is working on VR games. Ascension VR is the latest release. I’m working on a new medieval city building game called Kingdoms and Castles.

PS4B: Thank you for your time. Would you like to add something else before we go?

Huge thanks to BlitWorks for taking care of the PS4 port. We wouldn’t be here today without them. Also, eat healthy and stay in school!
