[PS4Blog.net Interview] In Vitro Games On Defenders of Ekron
We’re currently playing Defenders of Ekron for review so we got in touch with In Vitro Games to talk about its development for PlayStation 4.
PS4Blog: Good afternoon! Thank you for joining us at PS4Blog.net. Would you mind presenting yourself to our readers and letting them know a bit about yourself and your work?
Hello! My name is Karen Ramírez, and I’m the narrative designer and scriptwriter here at In Vitro Games. I wrote the story, characters, and universe from the original idea Ricardo Verdugo, our CEO, had when he started development.
PS4B: Defenders of Ekron is now out on PlayStation 4. How would you describe the game to someone who has never heard of it?
Defenders of Ekron is an adventure shoot ’em up (shmup). This mash-up fuses the best of exploration and narrative experiences from an adventure game and the classic action from a shmup, with a twist. The player takes on the role of Eneas, a bold cadet who has trained his entire life to pilot his Anakim. The Anakim is an advanced mech that absorbs and transforms the energy around it into a special ability.
However, something goes wrong, and Enea’s Anakim fails to develop this ability. This happens just as a civil war, led by rogue Anakim pilots, erupts, threatening to shatter the once peaceful land. Eneas is forced to join an experimental program to face the rogue pilots, but he will uncover dark secrets surrounding the Republic in the process.
Defenders of Ekron includes features such as 360° shooting range, unique scenarios to explore, an immersive story, and different upgradable and combinable combat modes. It’s an exciting game that brings back the nostalgia of old-school videogames… again, with a modern twist.
PS4B: How long did it take the team at In Vitro Games to develop the game? Did you run into any particular challenges when working on it?
We developed Defenders of Ekron over a three and a half year period. At first, we struggled a bit with the challenges of coming together as a new independent team, and we were also fairly new to game development. We came from different areas and challenged ourselves – even though it took us a more time than we expected, we’re pleased with the outcome. It was really hard, especially developing for PlayStation. When we first started developing the game, it was only slated for a PC release. Add to that the fact that Latin America is a region that’s just now expanding into the independent game development market, and we had to make great sacrifices with little resources and contacts, but we believe this kind of projects help the region to grow, so we would be proud to help other teams.
PS4B: Since the game is now out there, is the team working on additional content for the game to be made available either as free or paid DLC? Or is the team now focusing on a new release?
After Defenders of Ekron, we are planning on placing our focus on a new release for PC and console. Hopefully, we will have something to show in 2018!
PS4B: And now our time is up. Would you like to add anything else before we go?
