[PS4] The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Extended Edition Review
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Extended Edition is a game based on the famous vampire hunter from Bram Stoker’s Dracula. This time you play as the legendary hero’s son who has followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a vampire hunter. The story is set in a gothic/steampunk Eastern Europe, and you play in an isometric perspective. Want to learn more? Then read our The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Extended Edition review!
Neocore Games must be huge fans of Diablo 3 as the game draws considerable inspiration from said critically release. The looting, rarity color coding, storage system and some of the game’s mechanics will remind you of Diablo 3. Of course, I am not complaining! I absolutely loved Diablo 3 so I was more than ready to play The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Extended Edition on PS4!
Van Helsing junior and his sidekick Katarina are searching for a crazed scientist who is threatening the very peace between monsters and humanity. Van Helsing has some pretty big boots to fill – can he hope to be as good as his father?
Once you boot up the game for the first time, you will be greeted with a screen of options. For example, you can pick a name for Van Helsing. You also have to select one of three classes for him: Hunter, which is a melee class that can deal damage using blades and guns and with a few magical powers too; Thaumataturge, a non-melee class that favors arcane magic to survive; and the Arcane Mechanic class with some powerful tools such as grenades or some “shock therapy.” After this, you’ll need to select between the four available difficulties, from Casual to Heroic – there is a difficulty setting to suit every type of player!
Katarina is an ethereal being who is bound to serve the Van Helsing family. She is your sidekick and will help you in combat. In fact, if you tweak the game’s settings, she can do a whole lot more if you want her to. She can fight your battles and even collect all loot for you! Katarina can even level up and has her own skill tree, so there is plenty to unlock and experiment with between both characters.
The combat, as is the case for games in this genre, consists of a lot of button mashing for regular attacks with the occasional switch for magic skills. This makes it an easy pickup and play experience for everyone. You’ll always be fighting something as enemies come at you constantly. As you progress the enemies you face will pose a greater challenge and you’ll need to be more careful as they will also be of a higher leven than you.
There are several sidequests to complete in the game which you can obtain from the NPC you meet – they are usually marked on the map with a green exclamation icon. They are not difficult to complete and are worth your time since you’ll be able to earn a lot of EXP from them, thus making it easier for you to unlock more slots in the skill tree.
As for the game’s looting system, it will be color coded for rarity. The basic rule is that the stronger and deadlier an enemy is, the better the potential look it can provide. And just because you managed to defeat an overpowered enemy to secure a rare weapon doesn’t mean you can equip it right away. Weapons are locked so that players must first reach a specific level before they can use them, so do keep this in mind!
If you have a PS4 Pro, the game supports extra enhancements that make everything pop a bit here and there. It’s not a mindblowing boost but it’s certainly a welcomed option. And if you only have a regular PS4 don’t worry since the game looks nice on that as well.
The one complain I have about the game is something that is becoming a bit of a constant with PS4 release: the game’s text is too small, forcing you to move closer to the TV. It’s not a dealbreaker, but something that will hopefully be fixed with a patch soon.
The Incredible Adventures of Van Helsing: Extended Edition is a fun game that will remind players of the Diablo series – which is never a bad thing. There’s plenty of content on this one as well as a full trophy list with a Platinum. So if you feel you’re up for a challenge, check out this game today!
