[PS4 Review] Zen Pinball 2 – The Walking Dead
The Walking Dead has finally comes to PS4, but not in the form you might think. Zen Pinball has just released their newest pinball table based on the hit from TellTale Games The Walking Dead.
The pinball masters at Zen Studios have partnered with Telltale Games and Robert Kirkman, the Eisner Award-winning creator and writer of The Walking Dead for his Skybound imprint at Image Comics, to create an all-new digital pinball table based on the award-winning The Walking Dead game series.
-The Walking Dead Pinball table playfield is a tour of the most iconic locations from the game, including the St. John’s Dairy Farm, Travelier Motel, Bell Tower, Train & Level Crossing, RV and more.
– Original lines and award winning voice actors from the game, including Dave Fennoy and Melissa Hutchison
– Missions center on player choice in survival situations such as choosing who to save in a zombie attack, solving problems within the group, and acquiring important tools, vehicles and fuel.
– Lee, Clementine and The Walking Dead zombies are represented as 3D characters in game.
Zen Studios has always done an exceptional job of creating new and unique pinball tables while managing to pay proper homage to the license under the spotlight. They have always managed to capture the essence of what makes a license special, and they’ve managed to do that again here in their newest release for the Walking Dead series.
At first the table looks like a traditional pinball table, but as you start to look at it you’ll notice all of the detail that have been included. Zen Studios has managed to capture the complete art style and sound from the Walking Dead series games. The two main characters Lee and Clementine are front and center on the table itself, looking great and straight out of the game. To make this even better, Dave Fennoy and Melissa Hutchison recorded new dialog for the game!
I’m not going to explain pinball itself as we all have all played it some time. The game uses very interesting mechanics to help you reach your top scores since it takes the episode format from the game series and makes it work on a pinball table. After accomplishing a task with your ball, you can choose which episode you would like to play. Once you use the flipper to choose, it has you make a choice and then you can do a challenge to reach the outcome. For instance, in one scenario, I had to choose whom I was going to save. Once I locked in my choice, I then had to complete a challenge to reach a high score using only the bumpers which had their score dramatically bumped up. If I was successful, that episode title lit up on the table.
Sometimes though the best times in the game were the little things and the attention to detail. After losing your ball on the table, you end up focusing on the scenery on the table itself, which looks amazing.
If you’re a fan of of the Walking Dead series then this should be added to your collection. Zen Studios did a great job recreating the feel from the game and they should be proud of their work. If you have enjoyed other releases for Zen Pinball 2, then this will definitely be right up your alley, although you may want to invest some time in the first season of The Walking Dead game from Telltale beforehand.
